Vitalik Buterin aims to transform Ethereum’s speed and scalability

Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has outlined a new approach to improve the network’s speed and scalability by rethinking how block finality is structured.

In an August 1 blog post, Buterin proposed separating Ethereum’s fork choice mechanism from its finality process, which he believes could simplify the protocol and enable faster block confirmations.

Ethereum’s consensus currently relies on a slot-based design, where both fork choice and finality mechanisms operate within the same time window.

While robust, this design requires multiple rounds of validator communication during each slot, limiting how quickly new blocks can be confirmed.

Considering this, Buterin suggests reducing the complexity by allowing the two processes to evolve independently. He wrote:

“[There] may be [a way] to move somewhat away from the tight coupling between slots and finality introduced in 3SF, and instead have a more separate LMD GHOST fork choice rule and finality gadget, with different participant counts.”

A two-tiered system

Under his plan, Buterin proposes assigning a small, fixed number of validators, roughly 256, to run the fork choice algorithm, LMD GHOST, on a per-slot basis. This group would rapidly determine the head of the chain in real time, acting as Ethereum’s “fast lane” for block selection.

Meanwhile, a broader validator set operating on a slower cadence would handle the finality process, which determines which blocks become irreversible.

This split could allow Ethereum to reduce the number of communication rounds per slot from three or four down to just two, making the network more responsive without sacrificing consensus integrity.

Buterin pointed out that his proposed architecture has broader implications for Ethereum’s scalability.

He said the move would allow the network to shorten slot times and handle a larger validator pool safely. This could scale to a million participants without introducing significant overhead or relying on complex cryptographic tricks.

Buterin also argued that such a system would keep Ethereum secure while simplifying its internal operations. It would also give developers more flexibility to upgrade or swap out finality mechanisms over time, without disrupting the core fork choice logic.

Meanwhile, the proposal is still in the research phase and is open to further community input.

Nonetheless, it marks a significant step toward streamlining Ethereum’s performance as the network evolves into a more efficient and scalable platform.
