Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar resigns citing health reasons

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Monday (July 21) officially resigned from his position, citing health concerns and the need to prioritise medical advice.

The resignation came on the first day of the monsoon session of Parliament

His resignation, submitted under Article 67(a) of the Indian Constitution which is effective immediately.

In his resignation letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar expressed deep gratitude for her unwavering support and the cordial working relationship they shared during his tenure. H

Dhankar also extended his appreciation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers for their constant cooperation and guidance.

“I am deeply thankful for the invaluable experiences and insights I have gained as Vice President in our great democracy,” he wrote, adding that the warmth and trust received from Members of Parliament will always remain close to his heart.

Dhankhar also said it was a privilege to witness India’s remarkable economic growth and historic development. He expressed confidence in the nation’s bright future and its growing influence on the global stage.

“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements,” he stated.

Jagdeep Dhankhar served as the 14th Vice President of India and Chairman of the Rajya Sabha since August 11, 2022. His term was originally set to end in August 2027.

The resignation brings an unexpected end to his term, which was marked by active parliamentary engagement and strong support for government policies.
