Bloomberg reports that the US administration is considering pushing the idea of an export tax credit to Congress. There is also talk of subsidies for importers to offset tariffs, which is even dumber.
“The rebate, which would be geared toward boosting US manufacturers,
would be issued at the end of the year to offset the effects of
retaliatory tariffs as American companies seek to sell their goods in
foreign markets, according to people familiar with the deliberations.”
Let me get this straight?
You want other countries to drop trade barriers and subsidies so you can replace them with your own? And you want to tax importers via tariffs and then give them more money at the same time?
We’re at the point where every idea starts to sound like a less cohesive overall vision.
In any case, I suspect this one is a long-shot in Congress.
