MEXICO CITY (Reuters) – Mexican safety forces have detained about 475,000 irregular migrants since October, authorities mentioned on Friday, as U.S. President-elect Donald Trump threatens Mexico with tariffs except it stops unlawful migrants from arriving on the shared border.

Practically half 1,000,000 migrants being detained between Oct. 1 and Dec. 26 suggests measures intensified in direction of the top of the yr.

Because the begin of the yr, some 900,000 migrants have been detained, the federal government mentioned earlier this month.

“We predict it is a mannequin that works, that may all the time be improved, however that has responded very satisfactorily to this (migration) phenomenon,” Overseas Minister Juan Ramon de la Fuente mentioned on Friday.

Talking alongside President Claudia Sheinbaum at her common press convention, he mentioned the variety of migrants detained on the shared border fell 81% in mid-December when in comparison with a yr earlier.

Israel Ibarra, a researcher on immigration points on the Colegio de la Frontera Norte, mentioned the rise in detentions was partly as a consequence of “the dedication to scale back the transit of individuals in mobility by way of Mexico and to the USA” made by Sheinbaum in a latest name with Trump.

The decision between Sheinbaum and Trump came about in late November after the Republican threatened to impose a 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada if these international locations don’t cease the arrival of medicine, largely fentanyl, and migrants.
