LIV: What are some of your favorite features of this beautiful home?
Owners: 59 borders is a magical place. It has been an amazing property to own. The previous owner told us that the wine cellar has been cited in three magazines as one of the top private cellars in Colorado. Our guests absolutely love lounging around in that area that opens up into the game room with the spa nearby.
The wine cellar has six feet of poured concrete to make it the perfect temperature. There is no heat or cooling required and it’s built to look like a mine shaft. The table in the wine room is made from petrified cypress like stone that weighs 900 pounds. There is also a 17th century wood working bench from Norway in the room.
Just around the corner from the wine room is the hot tub. It is a highlight after a day on the mountain skiing, snowshoeing or hiking in the summer. It is like a hot spring on a mountain creek. In the summertime, the house has a water feature that starts with two large ponds up above and boldly moves down, appearing to end in the hot tub with a waterfall. The reality is the hot tub is fully chlorinated, and the external water tucks underneath and processes back through. There are so many amazing features in this house but one additional one would be the theater room – it is way better than going to the movie theater!
LIV: Please share your idea of a perfect day in the winter at this beautiful mountain home.
Owners: We have had numerous discussions as to which we love the most: summer in Beaver Creek or winter in Beaver Creek. The perfect winter day would certainly involve some snow skiing, but we probably wouldn’t get to the mountain before 9:30am and might leave by about 2:30pm. Arriving home, we usually zip down to the hot tub and bask in the 104° water. Our favorite thing to do is ski together and if our kids are involved, that’s the very best. Interestingly, though, we truly love snowshoeing. We have had some of the most fun snowshoeing adventures zipping around the snowshoe trails throughout the mountain and even on the golf course. Even though we are close to the slopes, we love the service provided in Beaver Creek (we think it’s a great amenity) that makes it so easy to get to the mountain quickly. It whisks us up to Centennial and about 17 steps later we are in the Gondola line.
Summertime days are amazing also. Often our summertime day will start on a balcony with the temperature in the upper 40s. We might have warm clothing with a blanket on and a cup of coffee with our favorite book to read. Beneath you on our porches is our water feature, which is a booming mountain brook with ponds and waterfalls and amazing foliage. On that summer balcony you’re surrounded with beautiful, colorful flowers in the flower boxes.
Then, most days in the summer we go for a hike. Sometimes we get to hike straight up Borders Road through Strawberry Park to the Village to Village Trail. It’s a great way to get exercise and be inspired. We also love to hike down to “flags and back” or hike down to the trail along the river in Avon. A great benefit of being in Beaver Creek is if we are too tired or someone in the group doesn’t want to walk back up to the house, we can always ride the shuttle back from the Welcome Center.
LIV: What are some of the top resort amenities that you enjoy in Beaver Creek?
Owners: Another favorite hobby in the summer is pickleball. The resort has some great courts and the golf course is spectacular. The views are spectacular and always a highlight to play golf with our three sons. Our boys also love to find a spot on the river to fly fish. I can’t think of anything more peaceful than enjoying time on the river with a rod in hand.
LIV: Please tell me about the unique finishes and features in this beautiful home.
Owners: 59 Borders is an amazing home and was built with an eye for intricate detail architecturally. We are only the second owner of this exquisite home. Not only did the previous owners thoughtfully design this home, they also filled it with beautiful pieces from around the world throughout the home that fit uniquely with the contemporary pieces that we have added.
The previous owners were well traveled and loved to bring back beautiful pieces from some of their favorite travel spots. The front door is from Taos, New Mexico. In the great room, the hope chest that sits behind the sectional sofa is from Europe. The bar is from a pub in England and on the second floor, the tooled leather bar was made by a saddle maker in Taos as well. The English officer’s desk, in the office next to the master bedroom is from the 1800’s and made in India. The most interesting story regarding furniture is the dining table that was shipped from the South of France.
It took a little longer than expected to build this incredible round table (that seats 14) the house was further along in the building process than they expected. This caused a problem with getting the table inside the house. The builder explained that the table would need to be cut in half to get it in the home. The original owners spared no expense to keep the integrity of the table and decided to take the side wall off of the home and bring the table up and inside with a crane. They also brought the chandelier in while the wall was removed, since it wouldn’t fit through the door either. This beautiful chandelier that hangs over the staircase is electronic and lowers for cleaning.
59 Borders is possibly the greatest property we own for entertaining. It is laid out amazingly on the top floor. The top floor has large, spacious and abundant areas. Last summer, we hosted a fundraiser for about 70 people and that event was one for the ages.
LIV: Would you share some special memories that your family has made here?
Owners: This beautiful home has been the vessel for some amazing memories made with our family and our friends. I think our family‘s favorite memory in Beaver Creek is when our son Ryan and his girlfriend Ansley got engaged. Whoa, what an amazing time and what an awesome group of people for the party thereafter. Ryan and Ansley hiked Beaver Lake trail to the lake, where his brothers staked out the spot and got set up with cameras, etc.
In addition to engagement day, one of our family memories is the gender reveal for Ryan and Ansley‘s first child. Our first grandson revealed!!!
LIV: From the gorgeous setting in Beaver Creek to the phenomenal access for skiing to a host of resort activities, the home at 59 Borders Road truly has it all.
