GitHub Copilot announces the deprecation of several AI models, including OpenAI GPT-4.5 and GPT-4o. Users are advised to transition to suggested alternatives by the specified dates.

GitHub is set to deprecate several AI models within its Copilot service, a move affecting users of the platform’s AI-powered coding assistant. According to an announcement published on GitHub’s blog, models such as OpenAI GPT-4.5, o1, o3-mini, and GPT-4o will be phased out over the upcoming months.

Deprecation Timeline and Alternatives

The deprecation process will commence on July 7, 2025, when the OpenAI GPT-4.5 and o1 models will no longer be supported. Users are encouraged to transition to OpenAI GPT-4.1 and o3, respectively. Following this, the o3-mini model will be deprecated on July 18, 2025, with OpenAI o4-mini recommended as an alternative. The final model, GPT-4o, will be retired on August 6, 2025, with users advised to adopt GPT-4.1.

Guidance for Users and Administrators

GitHub advises users to update their workflows and integrations to align with the supported models before the deprecation dates. Copilot Enterprise administrators are encouraged to ensure that access to alternative models is enabled through their model policies within Copilot settings. Verification of model availability can be done via individual Copilot settings, allowing users to see the model options in the Copilot Chat model selector on VS Code and GitHub’s platform.

Impact on GitHub Enterprise Customers

For GitHub Enterprise customers, the company suggests reaching out to their account managers should they have any questions or concerns regarding the transition. This proactive measure aims to facilitate a smooth transition for enterprise users, ensuring minimal disruption to their coding environments.

As AI technology continues to evolve, GitHub’s strategic adjustments reflect the broader trend of optimizing AI models to enhance performance and user experience. This deprecation initiative aligns with GitHub’s ongoing efforts to maintain cutting-edge AI solutions within its Copilot offerings.
