Hi everyone,
I’ve been working as an accountant for the past 2–3 years, mainly in fund accounting and financial reporting. Over time, I’ve realized I’m more interested in moving into a financial analyst or investment analyst role — something that’s more forward-looking and focused on insights and strategy.
Since my background is mostly accounting-focused, I’m now trying to figure out:
What key skills or tools should I prioritize for this kind of career switch?
Are there any beginner-friendly resources or platforms where I can learn core finance concepts like valuation, modeling, and equity research?
Does anyone know of open-source projects or volunteer opportunities I can contribute to for hands-on experience? Even if it’s just helping clean data or build dashboards — I’m happy to assist.
For those who’ve made similar transitions: What helped you the most when moving from accounting into analysis/investment roles?
I’d also appreciate pointers toward any online communities (Slack, Discord, etc.), where I can learn, collaborate, or even just observe how things are done.
Thanks in advance! I’m really motivated to make this switch and learn from those ahead of me.
