Can AI actually help with value investing, or is it just hype?

Can AI actually help with value investing, or is it just hype?

I've been exploring the intersection of AI and value investing lately, and I'm genuinely curious about this community's thoughts. There's a lot of noise about AI in finance, but most of it seems focused on day trading or momentum strategies – the opposite of value investing.

The case for AI in value investing:

Warren Buffett's principles are logical and systematic:

Analyze company fundamentals (earnings, debt, competitive moats) Compare intrinsic value to market price Look for consistent earnings growth and strong management Consider long-term competitive advantages

These are data-driven decisions that could theoretically be enhanced by AI's ability to process large amounts of financial data quickly.

The case against:

Value investing requires qualitative judgment that AI might miss:

Understanding management quality and corporate culture Recognizing industry disruption and competitive threats Evaluating the sustainability of competitive advantages Making contrarian bets against market sentiment

Buffett himself emphasizes understanding businesses, not just numbers. Can AI really understand a business the way a human can?

My experience so far:

I've been working on a side project using AI to help people apply value investing principles. The goal isn't to replace human judgment but to democratize access to the kind of analysis that's currently only available to professional investors.

What I've found:

AI is excellent at screening for quantitative factors (P/E ratios, debt levels, earnings consistency) It can quickly identify potentially undervalued companies based on fundamental metrics It struggles with qualitative factors like management quality or industry disruption It can help beginners learn what to look for, but shouldn't replace critical thinking

The real question:

Most people want to invest using proven principles like Buffett's, but they lack the time and expertise to do proper fundamental analysis. Could AI tools help bridge this gap, or would they just create a false sense of confidence?

Questions for the community:

What aspects of value investing do you think could benefit from AI assistance? Screening? Analysis? Education? What would you never want automated in your investment process? Have you tried any AI-powered investment tools? What was your experience? How do you currently do your fundamental analysis? What's the most time-consuming part? What would make you trust an AI tool for investment research? What red flags would make you avoid it?

I'm particularly interested in hearing from experienced value investors. The goal isn't to replace the wisdom and judgment that comes from years of experience, but to help newcomers learn and apply these principles more effectively.

What's your take on technology's role in democratizing sophisticated investment analysis?
